Forests are affected by a broad array of diverse EU environmental and sectoral policies. Environmental forest functions have attracted increased attention to the protection of biodiversity, the impacts of climate change impacts, and energy policies.

In public perception, on top of the production of wood and other forest products, forests are valued for their role as public and cultural amenities, biodiversity reservoirs, climate and local weather regulators, sources of clean water and protection against natural disasters.
