Forests are a key element of most European landscapes and play many ecological, environmental, economic and social roles. This section is structured in five priority themes for forest data and information.
Forests cover 159.2 million hectares in the EU27, and 202.5 million hectares in the EEA38. The EEA38 is comprised of:
- North Europe: Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway and Sweden
- Central-East Europe: Czechia, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovakia
- South-East Europe: Albania, Bosnia Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Greece, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, Slovenia and Turkiye.
- Central-West Europe: Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, United Kingdom and Switzerland
- South-West Europe: Andorra, Italy, Malta, Portugal and Spain

Countries report the information to global and Pan-European forest processes such as Forest Europe, UNECE, and the Forest Resource Assessment of the Forest and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). Primary sources of forest information are collected by National Forest Inventories and other monitoring systems such as ICP-Forests.
